Fabric Art

For the first time in a looooooong time, being a mom and all, I was able to go to the bookstore ALONE thanks to my mother-in-law. I was not in search of anything in particular, I was just going to browse and really just enjoy spending time alone. Being a "fabric artist" I enjoy looking at the art/craft/weaving/sewing section...lo and behold I found this book that I was immediatly drawn to. Check out the picture. It's called The Art of Manipulating Fabric by Colette Wolff. After paging through it, I quickly bought it and my "alone" time was up so it was stashed away in my Christmas luggage for about a month. I stumbled upon it the other day and am just inspired by it. So inspired, in fact, that I am going to make a pledge to try and learn (or at least try) every stitching technique in there. Hence, I have started this blog to keep me organize, on track and accountable. And also to vent my impending rage at the difficulties I am sure to have.

The book is seperated into six parts: (with a few different techniques included under each part)

  • Controlled Crushing
  • Supplementary Fullness
  • Systematic Folding
  • Filled Reliefs
  • Structured Surfaces
  • Mixed Manipulations

I know they really don't sound all that interesting, but I promise that if you saw some of the pictures in this book you would be awed. The last sentence of the "Getting the Most from this Book" section says...APPROACH WITH A SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE.... so here goes...

Coming up....controlled crushing (gathering and shirring)...
